Tecoma stans (Esperanza), also known as yellow bells, yellow trumpets, trumpet-flower, or yellow elder, is a perennial flower that grows in the U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zone 8 and higher. It can be grown in colder climates as an annual.

Planting Seeds Indoors

Take the dried seed pods of esperanza plants and collect them. The pods should be removed from the seeds.

In 6-inch pots, place sterile potting dirt in the bottom. To prevent seeds from slipping away, water the soil with a fine mist.

Keep the soil moist. The seeds should germinate within two to three weeks.

Once the plants reach 2 inches tall, trim them. Only keep the strongest plants in each pot.

Transplanting Seedlings Outdoors

After all frost danger has passed, transplant esperanza outside in the spring. Make sure the bed is well-drained and in full sunlight. Add organic compost or well-rotted horse manure to the soil.

Dig a hole that is two to three times as large as the root ball. Make sure it is deep enough to support the plant. Plants should be spaced between them at least 3-4 feet apart.

Place the plants in their holes and gently remove them from the pots. Fill the holes with native soil and compact them around the plants.
