How To Create A Bootable USB Drive For Microsoft Windows

How do you install Microsoft Windows without using a DVD? Microsoft doesn’t produce Windows DVDs anymore. If you want to install Windows, you will have to use a USB flash drive to create a Windows installation media. That’s what I’m going to show you today. In this guide, I’ll be using Rufus to create the bootable USB flash drive but feel free to use whatever software you want! Rufus is a utility that allows you to create bootable USB flash drives from an ISO file. And now, let’s get to work.

To start this whole procedure you will need a computer with internet access and a USB flash drive with a minimum capacity of 8GB. It should be taken into account that the USB flash drive that we intend to use will be formatted. Therefore if you have any valuable files on it, you should back up your data before you start.

Make sure you gather the following things before you begin.

USB Flash Drive

As I mentioned earlier, preferably a USB flash drive with 8 GB of space or more.

ISO File

You can download the Windows 10 ISO directly from Microsoft. Just head to the Windows 10 download page, and then click the “Download” button visible on the page. The ISO file is 4.5 GB and may take 10 to 15 minutes to download, depending on your connection speed. You will also need a valid Windows 10 license key to install Windows 10.

Rufus Utility

You can download the Rufus setup file from the Rufus website. Once the application has been downloaded, install it. The main downside of Rufus is that it only supports Windows. If you are using a Mac, you can use Etcher as an alternative.

Now, let’s dive in.

  1. Launch the Rufus software. If you haven’t already plugged your USB flash drive in the USB port, now’s the time to do that.
  2. After that you have to select your USB flash drive and ISO file.
  3. And now, click on the “Start” button to start the process of creating a bootable USB flash drive.

This will format your USB flash drive immediately. When the format is completed, the application will automatically create the bootable USB flash drive. You will be notified as soon as the application finishes its operation. Once the process is complete, you are safe to disconnect the USB flash drive from your computer.
